Goalie Development Clinics
2010-01-26
Goalie development clinics will be taking place all year on Wednesday evenings from 20:15-21:05 at the Minto Studio and on some Saturday mornings at Navan. For details, please read on.The Jr Grads will be holding goalie clinics throughout the year to help with the goalie development. The Goalie Development Stream will allow teams to send their goalies and goalie coaches to these clinics to take part in in this effort.
The clinics will be given by Craig Harper. For a brief description about these sessions, please read the attached files.
Please read the following outlines and documents and return the Goalie Assessment Form at the clinic so that Craig can build a goalie bio.
These clinics are not mandatory practices, but players and coaches are strongly encouraged to attend.
Please note that Craig will be handing out "workbooks" to the goalies for them to enter their perception about their play for their and coaches review.
These workbooks will need to be brought at every clinic. Craig will outline their purpose and use at the clinic.
NB: Please ensure that at least one coach (preferably the goalie coach) is present with the goalies. We would like you to take an active role during these sessions.

Goalies often do not get the same consideration as players do at team practices and yet the position is a lot more technical and requires some very specific coaching. Since most coaches will run their practices working on defensemen and forwards, often the goalies do not get the required attention to establish proper mobility, positioning and control. Rather they are usually, incorrectly, judged on their ability to stop the puck.
This is not the fault of the the coaches. Coaches often admit that their level of expertise and knowledge for properly developing goalies is not at par with that of the player's.
Goalies usually get two team practices a week, ice availability permitting, but may not get the attention required during those practices. Another way to look at it, is that they won't get as much out of those practices as players do. This is why this year we have made avialable, to all teams, a goalie development stream.
The thought behind this is that by augmenting the regularly attended team practices with a goalie targeted practice we will make a difference. This may not always be logistically possible. So we want to also share goalie coaching techniques with the coaching staff so those techniques can be used and reinforced during regular team practices, hence benefiting the goalies. This is why we ask that at least one coach attend these sessions with their goalies.
